Don’t Write That Letter!

Home buyers often try to win a bidding war by writing a heartfelt letter to the seller, painting a picture of who they are and how they’ll cherish the home. Some buyers go even further, creating videos and polished presentations.
But, according to this article from CNN Business, the letter idea can actually backfire. That’s because it can raise fair housing concerns. In fact, the National Association of Realtors has issued guidance advising Realtors not to deliver or accept these letters. The issue is the Fair Housing Act, which says it is illegal to discriminate in the sale of housing because of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, or disability. Because a letter would likely disclose those kinds of details, a seller who turns down the letter writer’s offer could be seen as being in violation of Fair Housing laws.
